  Looking Unto Jesus Day 25

Looking unto Jesus and not to our brethren, not even to the best and the most beloved among them. In following a man we run the risk of losing our way; in following Jesus we are sure of never losing our way. Besides, when we put a man between Jesus and ourselves, the man will increase and Jesus will decrease; soon we will no longer know how to find Jesus. Then when we cannot find the man or if he fails us, all fails. On the contrary, if Jesus is kept between us and our closest friend, our attachment to the person will be at the same time less enthralling and more deep, less passionate and more tender, less necessary and more useful. He will be an instrument of rich blessing in the hands of God when He is pleased to make use of him, and his absence will be a further blessing when it may please God to dispense with him in order to draw us even nearer to the only Friend who can be separated from us by “neither death, nor life” (Rom. 8:38).

The cult of personality can over take the people of God and as a result hero’s like Gideon, Samson, and Saul end up leaving a sad legacy of idolatry and destruction for their people.  For the same reason many in the Church have turned away disenchanted by the failings, large or small, of someone they looked to; some one they were somehow emotionally banking on.  Its hard to be kind and forgiving to the reed you’ve leaned on; that reed which has now broke and pierced you through.  Maybe it would be easier if first we asked God’s forgiveness for leaning on reeds and not on the Lord Jesus only.  David and Jonathan had the order right.  They put the Lord between their love for one another.

At my first defense no one stood with me, but all forsook me. May it not be charged against them. But the Lord stood with me and strengthened me...      II Timothy 4:16-17a

And as for the matter which you and I have spoken of, indeed the Lord be between you and me forever…  Then Jonathan said to David, "Go in peace, since we have both sworn in the name of the Lord, saying, 'May the Lord be between you and me, and between your descendants and my descendants, forever.'  I Samuel 20:23,42

Can We Pray?  Lord forgive me for letting anything or anyone come between me and Thee.  Help me to put my dearest relationships and loved ones on the other side of You.  Let me see them through You and enjoy them by You and love them in You and so bless them with You.  Amen
