Looking unto Jesus and not at the instruments, whatever they may be, which He employs to form the path He has appointed for us. Looking beyond people, beyond circumstances, beyond the thousand secondary causes, let us ascend to the first cause—His will. Let us ascend even to the source of His will—His love. Then our gratitude, without being lessened toward those who do good to us, will not stop at them. In the day of testing, under the most unexpected, the most inexplicable, the most overwhelming blow, we can say with the psalmist, “I was dumb, I opened not my mouth; because thou didst it” (Ps. 39:9) And in our silence the heavenly voice will gently reply, “What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know here-after” (John 13:7).
Then our gratitude, without being lessened toward those who do good to us, will not stop at them. I like this thought. It is okay to appreciate what others have done for us. Its just not okay to let our gratitude stop with them. Our gratitude should, however, ascend through them to the throne of God. Here is a good habit. Learn to recount those who have blessed you. Choose a year, a time in your life and think of all the people who blessed you and the blessings they offered you then. Feel gratitude welling up with in you. Now thank God for using these imperfect people to offer you His good and perfect gifts.
First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is being reported all over the world. God, whom I serve with my whole heart in preaching the gospel of his Son, is my witness how constantly I remember you in my prayers at all times; and I pray that now at last by God's will the way may be opened for me to come to you. I long to see you so that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to make you strong-- that is, that you and I may be mutually encouraged by each other's faith. Romans 1:8-12
Can We Pray? There are so many names and faces that have blessed me Lord. Some I have never met, others were dear friends. All were agents in Your Sovereign hand. They are in a wonderful way a portion of the all that I have received in Christ my Savior. I bless you for your matchless gifts of grace. In Jesus name, Amen
