  Looking Unto Jesus Day 41

Looking unto Jesus and not at the Law…  As soon as the Law has constrained us to seek Him as our only Saviour, then to Him alone belongs the right to command our obedience, which He makes as delightful as it is binding, an obedience which He inspires as well as requires.

The Law has constrained us to seek Him as our only Saviour…  because the Law, by itself, can only give us condemnation and fear of punishment.  He alone has fully kept the Law and fully taken our punishment in our place.  So the Law was a grace God used to drive us to Christ.  “Twas grace that taught my heart to fear and grace my fears relieved.”

As a Christian I come to the Law, not alone but filled with Jesus Christ.  He who perfectly kept the Law now lives in me.  Did you read that He makes obedience delightful?  Delightfully, He wants to live out His own obedient heart in my life!  A new obedience may rise in me.  This is not an obedience that seeks to gain heaven but an obedience that already possesses it.  It is not the obedience that seeks to win God’s pleasure but one that delights already in that pleasure through Jesus Christ.

Sacrifice and offering You did not desire; My ears You have opened. Burnt offering and sin offering You did not require. Then I said, "Behold, I come; In the scroll of the book it is written of me.  I delight to do Your will, O my God, And Your law is within my heart."  I have proclaimed the good news of righteousness In the great assembly; Indeed, I do not restrain my lips, O Lord, You Yourself know.  I have not hidden Your righteousness within my heart; I have declared Your faithfulness and Your salvation; I have not concealed Your lovingkindness and Your truth From the great assembly.           Psalm 40:6-10

But the meek shall inherit the earth, And shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.                                                                                               Psalm 37:11

Can We Pray?  It should not be a surprise Holy God that Thy Son would give us all His delights.  Yet it is.  We delight now in the same Law that once condemned us.  It is no longer a means of condemnation but a vehicle for our celebration of Your mercy and grace.  We thank You, Lord Jesus that in us You continually express Your delight in keeping the Father’s will.  May we live resigned to be channels of this current of active praise;  Your life of obedience flowing through us.  In Your Name.  Amen
