Looking unto Jesus and not at the apparent success of our efforts. The apparent success is not the measure of real success; and besides, God has not told us to succeed, only to work. It is of our work and not of our success that He requires an account. Why then concern ourselves with success? It is for us to scatter the seed, for God to gather the fruit-if not today, then tomorrow. If He does not employ us to gather it, then He will employ others.
It is a part of human nature to strive for success. Usually people set their own standard by which to measure their success or failure. But often ‘success’ is a nebulous thing. It is somewhat like those beautiful soap bubbles that children so enjoy – they may be big and beautiful, but all too soon they pop and disappear!
How can the Believer claim success? Certainly the Lord does bless His servants but it is never that the servants can point to it as evidence of ‘success.’ The only time this word ‘success’ is used in the scriptures indicates how success from God’s point of view comes to us. Joshua tells the people of Israel that it comes through meditation in the Word of God and then obedience to its truth. Let this be the ‘success’ that we strive for.
This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make they way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.
So likewise you, when you have done all those things which you are commanded, say, 'We are unprofitable servants. We have done what was our duty to do.' Luke 17:10
Can We Pray? Father, thank you for giving us ambitious hearts that dream of greatness. But take from us all other ambitions but to know and obey your Son. May we enter into all our labors with the intent to pursue that end. Forgive us for adding our status to what should be done for your glory alone. Let us not labor for the self-satisfying achievement but for that which brings glory to you and keeps us only unprofitable servants doing our duty. In Jesus Name, amen.
