Looking unto Jesus… to rest in the Redeemer is the true way to obey Him. And it is only when enjoying the peace of forgiveness that the soul is strong for the conflict.
If any abuse this blessed truth by giving themselves over unscrupulously to spiritual idleness, imagining that they can let the faith which they think they have take the place of the holiness which they have not, they should remember this solemn warning of the Apostle Paul: “They that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts” (Gal. 5:24). The Apostle John warned, “He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him” (I John 2:4). The Lord Jesus Himself said, “Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire” (Matt. 7:19).
We must beware that our confession of righteousness in and through Jesus Christ alone doesn’t bottom out in a life of lazy mediocrity. Too many individuals have turned the grace of Jesus Christ into an excuse to meander along the dark edges of the world. Now that they count themselves saved by Christ and committed to believing in Him, they feel free to court the comforts of compromise. Somehow they have deluded themselves into believing that they can confess a ‘heart for God’ and at the same time ‘feed their flesh.’ Not so. The faith that saves, the grace that covers our sins, works in other ways simultaneously. Saving faith and Grace create in those who possesses them a joy in holiness. And as we surrender to Christ daily He will fill us with an exuberant power to live out this new found joy.
But as He which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; because it is written, be ye holy; for I am holy. I Peter 1:15-16
Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord.
But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lust. Romans 13:14
Can We Pray? Father Almighty, I hear the call to fight and conquer all that comes against me. I know I must not tinker with temptation. I sense the urge to flee every appearance of evil. A pulse of war is in my spirit. I would battle and I want to prevail. But I am convinced that in my own strength I will fail. Let each piece of holy armor that I put on be a clothing of myself with the Lord Jesus Christ. I can then do all things through Him. Amen
