Looking unto Jesus now, if we have never looked unto Him. Looking unto Jesus afresh, if we have ceased doing so.
He had grown up in church. In college he was an active participant in Christian ministries, even leading a campus Bible study. But then he went into prison. This was the result of a hidden life of criminal activity. He confessed that all his life he never really prayed, never read his Bible and never maintained any personal communication with the Lord Jesus. His religion was just enough to deceive others and himself that he was really a good person after all. He could state with complete conviction that he believed that Jesus was the Son of God; that he died for his sins, was buried and had risen again from the grave. He didn’t doubt any of this. Yet he had no expectation that Christ had any power to express into his life from day to day. A visitor told him, “Your belief in Christ’s death, burial and resurrection is of no value to you. You may as well believe in a myth. If you cannot look to him in the here and now and find in him one you may call upon and know in personal relationship then you might as well not believe in him at all.”
Sadly there are many who have embraced a Christ-less Christianity. For some this is the form of Christianity they have slowly slipped into. Our times need, as never before, those who have recast their eyes on the Lord Jesus.
But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. II Timothy 3:1-5a
Can We Pray? How deceptive is my heart oh God! How easy I can convince myself of my own good through a shallow performance! I know that there is none good but God and all that is good in me is what I have received from you through your Son. Those in my times are slipping away from you. Lord set me among them as one who is intensely looking to your Son and so may some be led to look away with me to the one who is the power of all godliness. In Jesus name, Amen.
